5 Easy Ways to Teach Public Speaking to Your Kids

March 14, 2021 by Samidha Raj Leave a Comment

During their growing years, children learn to express themselves in various ways. While some kids are naturally comfortable voicing their thoughts and opinions, others may be shy or introverted. As adults, though, we all learn the importance of good communication skills in the workplace and in life. Therefore, it is essential to develop good communication skills from a young age, and one of the best ways to do so is by encouraging public speaking for kids.

Nowadays, schools offer many opportunities for public speaking for kids, such as class presentations, storytelling competitions, and book reports. Let’s reflect on the benefits of public speaking for kids. And this article will also discuss some easy methods for parents to teach public speaking to children.

The Importance of Public Speaking for Kids

1. Develops Confidence

Public speaking helps children overcome their stage fear and boosts their feeling of self-worth. As your child develops public speaking skills, they slowly gain confidence in expressing themselves freely around other people.

Public speaking also makes a speaker feel capable of holding an audience’s attention and delivering something of value to the world. This feeling can give an immense boost to your child’s self-respect and confidence.

2. Enhances Communication Skills

Public speaking for kids improves verbal communication skills like nothing else. During public speaking practice, children learn the value of voice modulation, voice expression, and a better understanding of audience response. Verbal communication is essential for better interactions, developing good interpersonal skills and better social interactions.

3. Leadership Skills

Developing public speaking skills early on in life helps improve your child’s leadership skills as well. Public speaking enhances self-confidence, communication skills, persuasion skills and the ability to rise above others to take charge, thus inculcating leadership skills among children. Whether your child chooses a career in arts or the corporate world, leadership skills support career growth at every stage.

4. Preparation for the Future

Public speaking for kids enhances their self-confidence and critical thinking abilities. Regardless of the stream of education or expertise that your child chooses to pursue in future, self-confidence and critical thinking will always be useful skills. Public speaking does a lot more than personality development for young children. It prepares them for the challenges that the future holds.

5. Critical Thinking & Creativity

Public speaking allows children to analyze, evaluate and think about different topics. It also gives them a chance to research and learn more about the issues they need to speak about. Such food for thought is an excellent boost for critical thinking and creativity.

6. Teaches the Art of Persuasion

Persuasion skills don’t come naturally to everyone. However, for achieving anything in life, we all require persuasion skills from time to time. Public speaking for kids shows them the importance of persuasion skills early on. Public speaking provides practice and learning how to persuade others from a young age.

Helping your child learn public speaking

  1. Make a public speaking game wherein every member of your family can pick a topic and talk about it for a few minutes. The rest of the family can act as the audience. You mustn’t interrupt your child or correct them when they are speaking in such an activity. Provide feedback for every speaker in the end.

  1. Encourage your child to read more books by reading with them and showing them the importance of voice modulation. Reading aloud helps children improve their pronunciation and confidence. If your child is too young to read independently, then parents must spend some time reading stories and poems aloud to them.

  1. Creative exercises such as essay writing or story writing can help children exercise their imagination and practice their writing skills. From time to time, conduct activities wherein the children can make some stories up and read them aloud to the whole family. Encourage them to read up on topics from books or the internet before they write about them.

  1. During public speaking, children may not know how to regulate their breathing and end up running out of breath in the middle of their speech. Teach them how to maintain a steady breath when speaking. This will help them keep calm and speak in a better way.

  1. Being a good speaker or conversationalist involves maintaining steady eye contact. When talking to your child or listening to them, maintain healthy eye contact and encourage your child to do the same.

The right exposure at the right time is crucial for developing skills such as public speaking for kids. Learning public speaking and communication skills in a structured environment can also be very beneficial for young children. Try different methods to understand what works best for your child to enjoy learning public speaking and boost their self-confidence at the same time.

Hope the above points will come in handy for parents who want to teach the art of public speaking to their kids. If you have found the article useful comment below and also share your tips as to how and what worked for your kids.

Cheers!!
