Beagle As A Family Dog

October 26, 2018 by Meghalee 10 Comments

Beagle is one of the most beloved hounds. Beagle love their owners and can make new friends with the turn of their heads. They are one among many small breeds that we remain smitten with. The name beagle comes from the French word ‘begueule’ meaning gape throat. Beagles were bred for running around the fields for chasing rabbits. These pooches are very intelligent but are single-minded. They were developed in Great Britain around the 1800s from several breeds like North Country Beagle, the Southern Hound, the Talbot hound, and possibly the Harrier. Due to their size and good temperament, beagles have become a favorite in the family circle. If you think that this beloved hound can become a part of your family here is some information for consideration.

  • Beagles bark horrendously. They are very loud barkers as well as howlers. Beagles have a tendency to howl when they are sad or bored or sometimes while even imitating someone. They are probably not the best apartment dogs especially if you have neighbors who like peace and quiet.
  •  You can recognize a beagle by its color or the triumvirate of black, brown, and white.
  • Beagles are small dogs and as such their short legs make them efficient while running or tracking something.
  • Beagles have a powerful nose. They have an amazing sense of smell and are driven by their nose. They have 220 million scent receptors and are thus scent motivated. Beagles are very intelligent and can differentiate smells and remember them for the future too. They have a long ear measuring up to 7 inches which is close to the nose. This feature helps them to trap the smell, and once they catch a whiff, there is no stopping them.
  • Beagles must be kept in a fenced yard. Due to their powerful nose, they have a tendency to follow the scents everywhere.
  • Beagles are not good apartment dogs. Because of its loud barking and howling it is best that they are kept on a farm or a house without neighbors.
  • Beagles do not require much grooming. However, they need to be bathed quite a lot as they tend to roll over in the scent which they pick up. If they find something that smells good they will roll over it.
  • Beagles have few health problems and as such costly medical bills are rare with it.
  • They have a life span of 12 to 15 years, a common lifespan for dogs their size.
  • Beagles need training and may not be a walk in the park. They can be trained provided you give them a lot of eatables, as they are food motivated and will never get tired of getting a treat. They also get distracted easily with all the scents around, so make sure to train them where they don’t get easily distracted.
  • Beagles are not guard dogs but due to their barking and howling tendencies, they can be good watchdogs.
  • Beagles are pack-oriented and are prone to separation anxiety. This makes them destroy things when they are left unattended or alone.
  • They do not need too much exercise as long as they get to run along in their natural way. Being food-driven, beagles can put in the packs -a feature common to this breed.
  • Beagles are great with kids, so welcome them to your family.
  • They are not known for being aggressive and have a gentle disposition towards children.

Beagles are affectionate, fun, and funny dogs. Just be prepared for action with a beagle. If you want them to do something, just bribe them with food and they will do anything you want. The beagles are overall a very good dog breed. They are packed with energy and are fun to be around. If their noise does not bother you then you can definitely try bringing these adorable dogs to your family. Remember to keep them in a fenced yard or a leash as you wouldn’t want to be chasing after them for hours.
