Fertility Diet: What to Eat When Trying to Get Pregnant

Do you know your diet intake has an impact on your chance of conceiving a child? While there are no specific foods for a fertility diet, some foods can boost your chances of conception and support your overall health.

Maintaining a healthy diet is important, but it is especially essential when trying to conceive. Infertility can be a cause of health issues like PCOS, hormone imbalance, and endometriosis.

Until the underlying cause of infertility is detected, you can increase your chances of conceiving by eating these healthy fertility foods.

List of Healthy Foods to be Included in Your Fertility Diet

1. Figs and Berries

Since the times of Ancient Greeks, figs have been believed to increase fertility. Figs are a rich source of iron that is important for conception and healthy eggs. So, have figs in your daily diet to increase your chances.

Berries are good at protecting eggs from damage as they are rich in antioxidants. You can include different types of berries in your diet such as Blueberries, cranberries, and raspberries.

Strawberries have been linked to a natural increase in libido. It also contains anti-inflammatory phytonutrients and vitamin C that improves fetal growth.

2. Sunflower Seeds and Seaweed are Good Fertility Diet

Sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E, which is an important nutrient to boost fertility. The seeds are packed with selenium & folate and are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids.

These essential nutrients increase the chance of conception. Consume sunflower seeds by roasting them or simply sprinkle them on your salads or stir-fried veggies.

Seaweed is packed with important nutrients that enrich the adrenals – the organs that are vital to the fertility health of women. Seaweed also contains protective antioxidants that increase the fertility rate in women.

3. Foods with Fat

You need to include plant-based fats in moderation. Nuts, grapeseed oil, avocado, and olive oil reduce the general inflammation in the body and promote regular ovulation and fertility.

Intake of good fats helps infertile women. Certain quantities of monosaturated fats during the IVF cycle increase the success rate of conception by three times.

You can include dark chocolates, whole nuts, and cheese as sources of foods with good fat. Do include avocado in good quantity as it is not only healthy but also nutritional and aids fertility.

4. Beans and Lentils

Beans and lentils are rich sources of fiber and folate. These are crucial in maintaining the hormonal imbalance of the body. Lentils contain a high level of polyamine spermidine that helps in the fertilization of the egg.

They are high in protein that promotes healthy ovulation. You can replace your regular meat meals with healthy lentils or beans. You can use them in salads and other forms.

If you’re looking for a canned variety, ensure that the can is BPA free as BPA can affect estrogen levels in women and affect fertility.

5. Full-fat Dairy Products

Full-fat dairy products should be included in the diet plan if you have a good tolerance for dairy products. Dairy contains saturated fat, which is good for fertility. It also provides vitamins A, E, K, and other fat-soluble vitamins.

Full-fat dairy products can help in conception as compared to low-fat dairy products. These include – milk, cream cheese, and ice cream.

If you already consume dairy products, you can swap low-fat milk or slim milk with full-fat milk. You also have an option to replace low-fat yogurt with full-fat yogurt. With two to three servings in a week, you can expect good results.

6. Walnuts

Walnuts contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They increase the chances of conception and regulate hormonal imbalance. Walnuts also reduce the chromosomal abnormalities in sperms. Thus, you can have walnuts as afternoon snacks or add a handful of them in your salads or bowl of oats.

Do include the above foods in your fertility diet plan to increase the chances of pregnancy. Also, add a good amount of veggies, fruits, nuts, and dairy products.

However, there are some foods that you need to avoid if you’re trying to conceive. These foods include – soy, sugar, alcohol, and other forms of saturated fats.

It is important to identify the food sensitivities as they may impact the fertility rate. You need to pay special attention to your food intake and diet as it plays a big role in infertility. Also, the right variety of foods may bridge the nutrient gaps you were lacking.
