How messy eating habits can help in child development?

Messy eating… what comes to your mind first when you listen to this?

Everyone loves cleanliness and nobody wants any mess around. But when you have a baby in your house and they start eating by themselves, they create a lot of mess from their hands to their clothes and around them. And babies creating mess means extra work for mom.

It is okay to let your babies get messy! To figure out why allowing your kids to eat this way is beneficial to their development, let’s look at the details.

Promotes Physical and Mental Development

Kids eat food by themselves and understand the texture, colors, flavors, and more. Their manual experience with these things helps them identify things easily when they start learning words. In addition to improving their understanding and grabbing abilities, they also improve their coordination abilities. Concentration and focus help strengthen their nervous system.

The Tendency To Be Less Picky About Food

It has been observed that when babies are forced to eat something, they tend not to like it. By letting them eat by themselves, they get a sense of enjoyment and they enjoy most of what they eat. According to the researchers, playing with food may be a helpful way to help kids overcome a fear of discovering flavors and eating a variety of foods. We need to allow our children to explore, touch, and feel their food as parents, rather than being hands-on when it comes to eating. As a result, they develop a more positive association with food and can satisfy their curiosity and drive for exploration.

Powerful Sensory Play

Kids while eating, use both hands, squish the food, dip their finger in liquid edible and lick it off. It is messy to see but there is a sense of enjoyment in the little one’s mind. By engaging with food in this way, they get to know and understand the different tastes and textures it has. The senses help them understand the different attributes of food, such as whether it is hot or cold, sticky or smooth, sweet or sour, solid or liquid.

Learns How To Self-Feed

When babies start feeding themselves, they learn to grab the food and utensils. Also, they don’t know how to reach their mouth initially, which is why they tend to have food all over their face. While babies are eating on their own, guide them to understand where their mouth is; they will eventually figure it out.

Promotes a Sense of Independence

When you let your babies smash the food with their fingers, and get it all over their faces, dresses, and everywhere else, it gives them a sense of independence and boosts their happiness. They hold the spoon and slices of food the way they want. It gives the impression that eating can be a pleasurable experience, which encourages them to try new foods.

Promotes Creativity

Do you wonder why babies create so much mess when they’re eating or playing? Because they are very curious and imaginative about the things they can do with things around them. The imaginations of children run wild and can be explored for a long time, with discoveries made, curiosity stimulated, and knowledge developed. As a result of messy food play, children can also learn more about their senses because of the sensory experience. This type of play nurtures awareness and understanding of the world around us by exploring how things feel, smell, and taste. It can be upsetting to them and make them cranky if you prevent them from doing so. The more creative they are, the easier it is to discover their interests.

You can keep things simple for yourself as a parent by following some simple steps after your baby eats.

  • Serve food in slices whenever possible, and let your child use his hands rather than a spoon or fork.
  • Buy Spill-proof clothes for your kids. While eating, spillage happens usually.
  • Use high chairs and booster seats made from easy-to-clean materials. Make sure to use bowls and plates with suction bases to minimize mess.
  • Babies do not like the process of cleaning. Consider bathing them after the meal got very messy. As a result, the cleaning will be easier for you, and your child will enjoy it.
