How to Take the Best Pics of Your Newborn

July 13, 2020 by Maggie Bloom Leave a Comment

There’s nothing more exciting than adding a new family member to the bunch. This is especially true for families who are welcoming a newborn. While it might be a time that’s filled with less sleep, tons of diaper changes, and tears, it’s also a time filled with snuggles, baby cooing, and long walks in the stroller. The moments fly by so quickly. Knowing this, take all of the pictures you can. Babies change so quickly. In order to get the best pictures of your newborn, consider the following tips.

1. Use backdrops and interesting settings

Keep things simple by using a plain flat sheet in order to create a lovely backdrop. If you have large pieces of cloth in fabrics like linen, muslin, or burlap, those will show up really well. If you use two thumbtacks or pins to secure the corners of the fabric to the wall, allow them to drape down as your backdrop.

2. Do quick sessions

Quick sessions are best because you never know when the baby is going to change their mind about the peaceful position they’re in. In order to get as many shots as you’d like, consider doing a session while they’re asleep. Be sure to turn off the flash and the sound. You don’t want to disturb their sweet slumber. Another way you can make sure the sessions are quick is by being prepared at all times. Keep your camera nearby. Make sure it’s charged. The same rule applies to your phone.

3. Comfort is paramount

If your baby is uncomfortable, you’re setting yourself up for failure. In order to get the most pristine and peaceful shot, do your best to make sure your baby feels extremely relaxed and comfortable. Make sure their head is supported well. Be sure to provide a lot of cushioning beneath them. Don’t prop them high on an unstable pedestal because a fall is never worth the shot.

4. Consider your lighting

Lighting can be tricky. It’s nice to have natural light. If you can position the photoshoot set-up in a room where the natural light floods through the windows, you’ll be in good shape. However, you don’t want the light to hurt the baby’s eyes. This applies to both natural light and artificial light. Consider factors like the light from the flash of the camera. In fact, it’s not harmful in small doses. However, lean on the side of caution. There are ways to get gorgeous shots without shocking the baby’s eyes with all of those flashing lights. Austin newborn photography recommends natural lighting for newborn sessions so the baby is comfortable and content.

5. Delight in the details

Take a look at the newborn photography of professional photographers. There’s something to be said for studying what you’d like to do. If you simply study the work of a local professional who specializes in newborn photography, you’ll be able to get an idea of the details you’ll need to pay attention to. Whether it involves zooming in to take photos of the baby’s little feet, chubby cheeks, or tiny hands, find ways to capture the details in a really artful way. Depending on the type of camera you’re working with, you can work on different techniques throughout any given day. What works well in the morning sunlight might not work as well at dusk. As you gain a better understanding of how to perfectly capture your baby, the photos will reflect that.

As you get accustomed to a photography routine, it will serve you well. Your children will be so grateful to see how intentional you were about documenting their childhood. As they grow older, you can improve your techniques and approaches. Before long, they’ll grow up and leave the nest. Thankfully, you’ll always be able to look back at photos in order to cherish the memories you made when your babies were young.
