Parent’s role in the lives of their children changes as they grow up. That is why we need to teach them at a very young age how to have a good outlook in life and inspire them on how to give importance to education. Believe me when I say what your child believes will be half of his personality. The other half may complete or destroy them the moment you release them to the outside world. We, as parents need to provide a solid foundation of culture to help our children care for themselves so they can take care of others. Here I have listed 8 Parenting tips for toddlers and children that will make you a more effective parent.
1. Be a good example
When a child is born, the baby depends on you for everything. During his early years, you are your child’s first teacher. Teaching them how to crawl, walk and how to hold their own bottle. Reading a lot of books with them every night and telling them how to organize and clean up their own mess. Simple as it seems but you are already building a person at this early stage. But actions are stronger than words. Your child is always observing you and will pick up many of those qualities without you having to tell them or even if you advise them otherwise. Therefore, try being a role model for your children.
2. Nurture the gift
Every child has his own likes and capabilities. As a parent, you will notice it as he grows. Try to distinguish those things from the usual stuff that he does. Have the courage to support his talent as early as now so he can have a deeper chance of exploring it. If you don’t spot a talent yet don’t worry, it will show up eventually. Be mindful and keep your eyes open.
3. Adjust to how your child learns
There are different kinds of modalities that can help a child learn. It is as simple as this. Toddlers may want to learn orally and by play method. As they grow, some children want to study alone, let them have privacy, and let them know you are always there to give them a hand. Some children need somebody to teach them step by step, let them know that you help them for now but they should learn how to do it by themselves later. In this case, you can fill up the insufficiency in every situation. Some learn easily through visual pictures while some make it easier as they listen to music. What is important is you are there to guide your child and let them know that you are with him/her.
4. Know what your child learns at school
Every year there is a high chance of a new curriculum due to the continuous modernization of the world. New activities at school are present. Harder academic programs are given so that students can cope with the fast-changing technology and issues worldwide. Step up and let your child know you send them to school for the better, not for the worse, and that you are always there to guide them. Do not let them feel pressured instead teach them how to be persevering and responsible. These pressure situations could be a good opportunity to teach them how to cope with them.
5. Allow free time for a child to be a child
It is true that parents want the best for their kids that we sometimes forget to let them be a child. A child is not an adult, so don’t give them tasks they cannot accommodate. Don’t overschedule their free time and don’t enroll them in all kinds of workshops and extracurricular activities. Just choose what is essential for the need of your kid. Let your child play during break times because once he grows up into an adult he may never have the chance to have fun even when he wants to.
6. Restrict gadgets and TV
Gadgets and television are very helpful to us parents. It doesn’t only act as a part-time nanny but it also teaches our child a lot of new stuff. Addiction to gadgets is very common because of the fun it can provide. Restrict the use of this modern technology and spend time with them personally, so they can learn how to make themselves happy even without these things.
7. Ask questions
Know what your child is doing. How’s school? Is he okay today? Do you need anything? Do you need help? Simple questions but really means a lot. Just don’t force them to give the answers that you want to hear. All you need to do is to observe, he/she is your child you can notice if anything is wrong.
8. Treat them once in a while
Have a bonding time. Bring them to the mall and buy them some toys. You can watch their favorite superhero movie together at the theatre or at home. What is important is that you let them experience recreational activities with you. So they can have a moment to cherish for a lifetime.
