Teaching our children about the environment from an early age is a must. We cannot afford to have uneducated kids, which is why education is so important. The idea is to start with simple explanations through experimental learning, and of course, take your kids outdoors. Next comes the practical phase, where you can provide positive feedback to your children, and teach them how it’s done. It’s important to set the focus on experiencing and not teaching since kids learn faster through discovery.
Make sure you’re also showing signs of interest when teaching them about nature and conservancy. Your expression of interest will change theirs since kids are so adaptable. If you wonder and explore, they’ll wonder and explore along with you. Also, make sure you care for the environment and respect nature. Kids learn through modeling parental behaviors, so this is definitely something you need to pay attention to.
The Most Important Things Preschoolers Need to Know about the Environment and its Protection.
1. Clean up after yourself
The most important thing to teach your children is to clean up after themselves. If they learn that, they’ll act responsibly when exploring nature. This is really easy to do, especially if you’re a responsible parent yourself. You can start at home by having them clean up after they eat or play. Expand this activity to the outdoors. Teach your kid how important it is to leave the forest/nature clean after you leave. Teach them that this is a sign of respect towards what surrounds us while doing the opposite is a huge sign of disrespect.
2. Reducing Impact on the Planet
The future brings about great changes, but the real change starts in the present moment. Teach your children to reduce the impact on the planet by consuming less and recycling. These activities are not hard to teach, so your job won’t be too complicated. Help them think about all the objects that surround them – then, have them ask questions about each one of them. For example, let them purchase a plastic water bottle and then ask, what do you think will happen to it? Let them answer and pay close attention to their response. Teach them how to reduce plastic use and consume less by bringing awareness towards the future.
3. Becoming Loving Towards all Living Creatures
Teach your kid to see love and compassion in everything that surrounds them. This includes plants, leaves, animals, insects, humans, everything. Help them understand that all living creatures have an essence of the Universe within them, just as they do. If they understand that they’re sharing such a sacred gift with the living creatures around them, they’ll immediately become more compassionate. Enlarge their perspectives by telling them stories about the Universe, about the world, about people. Kids have an incredible way of receiving emotional feedback and energy, so tap into that.
4. Plant and Grow
Help your kids understand the importance of planting and growing. Help them plant trees and grow flowers. If you have the chance, take them to a farm, and teach them that animals should never be hurt. Teach them that picking flowers is not something they should do. Teach them that plants can also suffer; help them see the Earth for how beautiful it is and show appreciation towards everything that surrounds you and them. Setting the right example is crucial for their future education.
5. Don’t Take Nature for Granted
Teach your kids how important it is to give, not get. Enforce the idea that nature provides us with amazing wonders such as clean air and oxygen. Help them understand that they share this environment with other living beings, so they need to behave properly to secure a comfortable place for everyone. Do not take nature for granted and do not teach your kids to do so. When brushing your teeth, for example, turn off the water to preserve water. Don’t leave lights on when you’re not using them. Don’t buy more than it’s necessary. Remember that animals need these resources as much as we do. Once you understand this thoroughly, your child will too.
Teach your kid to respect nature, respect the environment, respect all resources that this Earth provides for us, and understand that they’re not the center of the Universe. Nature has been here before we have, so it’s important to keep that in mind. Also, we need to create a suitable, sustainable space for future generations that will live on this planet.
Wrapping Up
If you teach your kids to clean up after themselves, reduce their impact on the planet, become compassionate and loving towards all living beings, plant and grow and not waste, and not take nature for granted – you’re one of those awesome parents we should hear more about.
Do let us know in the comments how you teach your kids to be compassionate towards nature! Looking forward to all the valuable ideas.
